The new archaeological museum (Grand Egyptian Museum) is located in the immediate vicinity of the pyramids of Giza. With a floor area of just over 80,000 m², it is the largest archaeological museum in the world. The museum houses over 50,000 exhibits from Ancient Egypt on two floors, which are divided into themed areas. Most of the exhibits come from the old Archaeological Museum on Tahrir Square as well as from several smaller museums and warehouses from all over the country. However, there are also many exhibits on display that could not previously be exhibited in the old museum due to a lack of space. A particular highlight is the first-ever, almost complete exhibition of King Tutankhamun's burial objects, comprising around 5,000 items. The building itself is also an architectural masterpiece, including a gigantic glass façade that offers a breathtaking view of the pyramids of Giza.
The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization is located in the area of the ancient Islamic capital Al Fustat, surrounded by some of the oldest and most famous mosques, churches and synagogues in Egypt. The museum illustrates the entire history of Egyptian civilization, from the Predynastic and Ancient Egyptian eras to modern times. The main attraction is the Mummy Hall, which was brought here from the old Egyptian Museum in 2021.
