The Egyptian coast of the Red Sea lies in the totality zone from El Quseir (approx. 150 kilometers south of Hurghada) to the border with Sudan. Depending on the location, the total phase of the solar eclipse on August 2nd, 2027 will be between 4 minutes & 33 seconds (near Port Ghalib) and 6 minutes & 20 seconds (near Berenice in the deep south). On our webpage you will find selected resorts with great house reefs where you can dive, snorkel and of course relax. With adequate experience, you can also watch the solar eclipse on board a liveaboard - a unique and unforgettable experience for divers. Especially as the ships can anchor at spots where the duration of the total phase shall be well over 6 minutes.
The Red Sea is the northernmost tropical sea in the world and also one of the busiest waterways. The sea has an area of around 438,000 km² and is approximately 2,250 kilometers long. The maximum width of the sea is 355 kilometers and the deepest point of the sea is 3,040 meters in the central Suakin Trough, with the estimated average depth of the sea being 490 meters.
There are several theories about the origin of the Red Sea's name. One of the best-known explanations goes back to the seasonal blooming of a red-colored cyanobacterial algae - Trichodesmium erythraeum - which gives the sea a reddish-brown color. The name "Red Sea" is a direct translation of its Greek name - Erythra Thalassa. The Europeans also once called it the Erythraean Sea.
Egypt has around 1,500 kilometers of coastline on the Red Sea. Visitors can take part in many leisure activities here. The Red Sea is a paradise for vacationers who want to dive, snorkel, surf, kite and swim or simply relax in the warm Egyptian sun. The best-known vacationing areas on the Red Sea are Hurghada, Marsa Alam, Safaga, El Gouna, Dahab and Sharm El Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula.
Of course, you can also combine a cultural or nature trip with a beach vacation. Why not enjoy a few days of bathing fun on the Red Sea after a cultural tour or Nile cruise?
