The Great Pyramids of Giza are located on the western outskirts of Cairo on a limestone plateau. They are among the most famous and oldest surviving structures of mankind and are the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that still stands intact today. The pyramids were built in the 4th dynasty, between around 2,620 and 2,500 BC. They served as tombs and burial sites for the pharaohs Khufu (the largest pyramid, originally 146 meters high), Khafre (only slightly smaller, originally 143 meters high) and Mykerinos (originally 65 meters high). All three pyramids can also be visited from the inside. A narrow shaft leads to a relatively unadorned burial chamber, presumably the pharaoh's final resting place. On the south side of the Mykerinos pyramid are three smaller queen pyramids, which are less well preserved.
The Sphinx measures almost 74 meters in length and is around 20 meters high. It depicts a reclining lion with a human head, and was probably erected under the pharaoh Khafre to guard his tomb. However, there are several theories and the exact purpose of the building is still not known today.
We are happy to take you to an exceptional breakfast at Khufu's restaurant before your visit to the Giza Plateau. The upscale restaurant impresses with particularly tasty oriental dishes and arguably the best view of the plateau of the three great pyramids, with the skyline of Cairo in the background. A truly unforgettable experience.
