The White Desert National Park is located in the Farafra Depression, approx. 45 kilometers north of the city of Qsar El Farafra. The national park has been an official protected area since 2002. The Farafra oasis is the most remote of all the oases in the Western Desert, about 800 kilometers from Luxor and just under 600 kilometers from Cairo. Bizarre, large white chalk cliffs, created by erosion through wind and sand, give the White Desert its unique appearance. At times you might think you can see snowfields. The park also serves as a refuge for various animals, including the endangered dune gazelle and the endangered dorka gazelle, as well as barbary sheep, jackals, various species of foxes and the sand cat.
